Job Summary
Hodgson Russ LLP, a dynamic and leading AmLaw 200 firm known for its excellence and innovation in legal services, is seeking an attorney to join the State & Local Tax (SALT) practice group as part of a strategic expansion into one of the country’s most complex and opportunityrich state tax markets, California. This role is ideal for an entrepreneurial practitioner with California experience and a growth mindset.
The SALT Partner will play a leadership role in developing the Firm’s California office, expanding its SALT platform nationally, and positioning the Firm as a goto adviser for highstakes tax residency and multistate planning, and audit matters involving individuals, closely held businesses, and multistate enterprises.
Qualifications
- Experience representing clients in planning, compliance, controversy, and litigation in California (and other jurisdictions, as applicable).
- Knowledge of California state and local tax laws, and other relevant multistate tax principles.
- Ability to manage multiple matters, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient leader who excels in client service, team development, and practice growth.
- Candidate will have a portable book of business and bring a client portfolio of SALT matters.
Responsibilities
- Establish and lead the Firm’s California SALT offerings, including responsibility for local market strategy, brand development, leadership, and growth initiatives.
- Deepen relationships with referral sources, financial advisors, family offices, and institutional clients in California.
- Advise clients on complex California residency and domicile issues, including statutory and commonlaw residency standards, daycount strategies, sourcing, and documentation.
- Provide strategic planning related to relocations, liquidity events, remote work arrangements, and exits from California.
- Counsel multistate businesses on nexus, apportionment, combined reporting, withholding, and compliance issues involving California.
- Represent clients in audits, administrative appeals, and litigations before state and local tax authorities, administrative appeals agencies, and state courts.
- Collaborate closely with national Tax, Private Client, Corporate, and Real Estate practices to drive crossselling and integrated client solutions.
- Supervise, mentor and develop associates and counsel within the SALT practice group.
Requirements
- Admission to the California State Bar is required.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Strong academic credentials.
- Excellent technical, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other practice areas to provide comprehensive solutions to clients.

At this time, the good faith estimate of the annual salary for this position, if the successful applicant is based in California, is $250,000+. Compensation for a successful applicant will vary based on legitimate criteria, such as experience, portables, and skill level.
