We are seeking a Staff Accountant who has a strong foundation in accounting principles, accuracy, organization, and follow-through. This role supports core accounting operations, with a strong focus on accounts payable and reconciliations.
Training on systems and procedures will be provided, however this role is best suited for someone who already has a strong understanding of accounting fundamentals (GAAP), can work through tasks without constant direction, and is comfortable managing responsibilities independently while processes continue to evolve.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Accounts Payable
- Process vendor invoices in NetSuite with accurate coding and documentation.
- Review invoices for accuracy, duplicate payments, contract compliance, and proper expense classification.
- Research contracts and supporting documents when coding or terms are unclear.
- Monitor expired contracts and follow up internally when issues arise.
- Maintain vendor files, W-9s, and 1099 tracking.
- Prepare year-end 1099 schedules and reports.
- Keep accounts payable current, organized, and fully filed.
- Reconcile the organization’s credit card activity, collect receipts, and post transactions.
Accounts Receivable and Cash management logs
- Processing all cash receipts, generating and circulating daily lockbox reports.
- Maintain daily and monthly cash receipt logs and monthly cash import file.
- Prepare monthly spreadsheets used in bank and account reconciliations.
- Manage accounts receivable, prepare invoices using NetSuite Invoicing Module and maintain invoice log.
- Assist with invoice tracking and receivable reconciliation.
- Research and resolve discrepancies as they arise.
Benefit Support/Other
- Prepare benefit reconciliation spreadsheets (health, dental, disability, vision, FSA, Commuter)
- Assist with related journal entries.
Month-End, Reporting and Additional Support
- Assist with monthly close entries, schedules, and reconciliations.
- Maintain organized online filing systems.
- Assist with annual audit preparation.
- Over time, assume responsibility for additional reconciliations, including bank reconciliations.
- Contribute to improving and documenting accounting processes.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills Required:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent work experience.
- At least 3-5 years' work of hands-on experience in an Accountant or Staff Accountant position, with specific experience with Accounts Payable, cash management and closing entries.
- Strong working knowledge of accounting fundamentals, including debits and credits, accruals, prepaid expenses, and basic revenue and expense recognition.
- Prior experience in a non-profit or mission-driven organization, including familiarity with funds or grant related accounting.
- Experience with 1099 preparation, audit, and year-end preparation.
- Strong ability to work independently, manage recurring responsibilities, prioritize work, and retain training without ongoing step-by-step direction.
- Experience using NetSuite or any other accounting system and Proficient in Microsoft Excel (intermediate level) in a daily capacity to maintain schedules, logs, and reconciliations.
- Strong communicator who can follow SOPs, documents work and raises issues early.
- Strong ability or attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.

Classification
The National Partnership recognizes a staff bargaining unit, National Partnership United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is NOT included in the NP United bargaining unit.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range for this role is $71,617- $87,824 with the exact salary determined by years of relevant experience, in alignment with NPWF’s compensation setting criteria.

Employment and Workplace Details
This position is a full-time DC-based position with a hybrid schedule that requires a minimum of four days of in-office work each month, with additional in-office and in-person days determined by your role and job responsibilities. There is a probationary period during the first six months of employment.
