Description

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Director of Accounting will lead all day-to-day

operations of the finance department, including budget development and analysis, accounting

for investments, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, relationship

management with banks and other vendors, and audit preparation. The Director of Accounting

will collaborate with a variety of internal constituents, including the CEO, CFO, and department

heads.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Strategic Financial Management:

  • Manages all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements. Maintain internal control safeguards for the receipt of revenue, costs and both budgets and actual expenditures,
  • Responsible for full monthly close process of Austin PBS and its subsidiaries;
  • In collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer, leads the development and delivery of organizational budgets, working to integrate input from internal stakeholders and ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and financial sustainability objectives;
  • Monitors $20M+ budget progress and presents financial metrics both internally and externally;
  • Oversee processing and recording of payroll, payroll liabilities, and benefits;
  • Implements consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all departments;
  • Supports the implementation, integration, and administration of financial systems to streamline processes and enhance efficiency; collaborates with relevant stakeholders to identify and address system needs and improvements;
  • Manages cash flow and forecasting for Austin PBS and its subsidiaries; and
  • Coordinates all audit activities.

Team Leadership

  • Provide the necessary training and development for staff;
  • Manager workload issues effectively to create a workplace that increases staff retention, and strengthens communication within and outside the department;
  • In coordination with the CFO, recruits and hires accounting and financial staff; and
  • Conducts performance evaluations for direct reports.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Identifies and addresses instances of non-compliance with organizational policies and procedures, reporting any issues to senior management for resolution;
  • Conducts regular reconciliations of organizational accounts to verify accuracy and identify discrepancies for timely resolution;
  • Ensures proper documentation and recording of financial transactions to maintain integrity and transparency in financial reporting;
  • Reviews full financial statements for Austin PBS quarterly board meetings;
  • Reviews departmental reports and report distribution; and
  • Prepares annual financial reporting requirements such as Annual Financial Report (AFR) and Station Activities Benchmark Survey (SABS) for Corporation of Public Broadcasting.


Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Related Field (Accounting preferred) required
  • Ten years or more of related experience required
  • Certified Public Accountant designation preferred
  • Non Profit experience is a MUST
  • Public Media experience is a PLUS
  • 3-5 years management experience required
  • MBA is a PLUS
  • Non Profit and or Media Industry experience is a MUST
  • Knowledge & Skills:
  • Prior nonprofit finance experience with a successful track record in a senior financial management role for at least 10+ years is essential
  • Demonstrable experience in creating and driving the analytic framework for planning and managing organizational change; ability to anticipate the infrastructure and systems needs in a complex nonprofit
  • Exceptional management skills
  • Recognized success in developing and monitoring systems to manage both internal operations and programmatic work that involve high levels of collaboration, particularly with department heads and other senior leadership
  • An accessible, visible, and flexible management style that inspires trust and confidence
  • Keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills that support and enable sound decision making in a complex organization; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems
  • Direct and concise communication skills. Active listener. Ability to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • Technology savvy with the ability to manage data for financial reporting quickly and effectively
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related programs
  • Must have experience with large ERP systems
  • Must have advanced Excel skills (i.e. pivot tables, vlookups, etc.)

This is a full time salaried position that is currently hybrid with a salary of $120,000 per year.
